New Travel Authorization for European Travel

Beginning 2024 a new requirement for U.S. citizens

The rules of travel to Europe are changing. Starting in 2025 (originally scheduled for 2024), people from over 60 visa-exempt countries — including the United States — will be required to have a travel authorization to enter most European countries, including Italy, Germany, Poland, Greece, France, Spain, and Portugal. ETIAS travel authorization is an entry requirement linked to a traveler’s passport, It is valid for three (3) years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new ETIAS travel authorization. With a valid ETIAS travel authorization you can enter the territory of these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays (normally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period). However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, a border guard will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry requirements.

You will be able to fill out the application form using the official ETIAS website (https://travel-europe.europa.eu/index_en) or the ETIAS mobile app (ETIAS is not currently in operation and applications are not being accepted at this point). Applying for the ETIAS travel authorization costs EUR 7. Most applications are processed within minutes. It is possible that your application may take longer to process. If so, you should receive a decision within four (4) days, but this period may be extended up to 14 days if additional information or documentation is requested, or up to 30 days if you are invited for an interview. This is why you should apply for an ETIAS travel authorization well in advance of your planned journey.

You will receive an email confirming the submission of your application, which will include your unique ETIAS application number; make sure to keep this email for future reference.

Once your application has been processed, you will receive another email informing you about its outcome. You must be in possession of a valid ETIAS authorization during your entire stay. If you plan to travel to Europe in 2025, be sure to check when the ETIAS travel authorization comes into effect and apply in sufficient time to meet deadlines.
